Isabu (異斯夫)

Isabu(異斯夫)

KIM Isabu(金 異斯夫) was a general and politician of Shilla(新羅, Silla) during the 6th century. He was also known as Taejong(苔宗). He is best remembered today for his role in subjugating the island nation of Usanguk(于山國), which is Ulleungdo(鬱陵島) and Dokdo(獨島) areas today. Although frequently referred to as "Isabu", his family name is written as KIM in the Samguk Sagi(三國史記). He was the 4th generation descendant of King Naemul(奈勿王), which also provides direct proof that his family name was KIM.

But In Samguk Yusa(三國遺事), his name is Park I-Jong(朴伊宗).

In 512, or the 13th year of King Jijeung(智證王), he captured Usanguk(于山國) as the governor of Haseullaju(何瑟羅州), which is Gangneung(江陵) area today. At that time, Usanguk was an independent tribal nation by the seas. Because of its people's aggressiveness and fieriness, it was not easy to defeat them. Therefore, Isabu came up with a wise tactic. He made wooden lions, arranged them on his vessels, and proceeded to Usanguk. Then, he said, "If you don't surrender, I'll release these hungry lions and have them eat you." As a result, the people of Usanguk surrendered obediently and promised to pay taxes to Shilla every year.

In 541, or the 2nd year of King Jinheung(眞興王), Isabu became Ichan(伊飡), which is the second highest position in Shilla’s Cabinet. He also advised the King about the importance of organizing a national history and appointed GEO Chilbu(居柒夫) to publish Shilla's national history. Dokdo has been a territory of Korea since the time of Isabu.

Frida Kahlo (1907-1954)

Frida Kahlo (1907-1954)

Frida Kahlo de Rivera (Spanish pronunciation: ['fɾiða 'kalo]; born Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderón; July 6, 1907 – July 13, 1954) was a Mexican painter, born in Coyoacán, who is best known for her self-portraits.[1]

Kahlo's life began and ended in Mexico City, in her home known as the Blue House. She gave her birth date as July 7, 1910, but her birth certificate shows July 6, 1907. Kahlo had allegedly wanted the year of her birth to coincide with the year of the beginning of the Mexican revolution so that her life would begin with the birth of modern Mexico. Her work has been celebrated in Mexico as emblematic of national and indigenous tradition, and by feminists for its uncompromising depiction of the female experience and form.

Mexican culture and Amerindian cultural tradition are important in her work, which has been sometimes characterized as Naïve art or folk art. Her work has also been described as "surrealist", and in 1938 André Breton, principal initiator of the surrealist movement, described Kahlo's art as a "ribbon around a bomb".

Kahlo had a volatile marriage with the famous Mexican artist Diego Rivera. She suffered lifelong health problems. Many of her health problems were the result of a traffic accident she survived as a teenager. Recovering from her injuries isolated her from other people and this isolation influenced her works, many of which are self-portraits of one sort or another. Kahlo suggested, "I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best." She also stated, "I was born a bitch. I was born a painter."

¶ I paint my own reality. The only thing I know is that I paint because I need to, and I paint whatever passes through my head without any other consideration.

¶ "The only thing I know is that I paint because I need to, and I paint whatever passes through my head without any other consideration."

Caroline Kennedy (1957- )

Caroline Kennedy (1957- )

Caroline Bouvier Kennedy (born November 27, 1957) is an American author, attorney, Ambassador to Japan, and member of the Kennedy family. She is the only living child of U.S. President John Fitzgerald "Jack" Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Lee "Jackie" Bouvier.

At the time of her father's presidency, she was a young child; after his assassination in November 1963, her family settled in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, where she attended school. Kennedy graduated from Radcliffe College and worked at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art, where she met her future husband, exhibit designer Edwin Schlossberg. She went on to receive a J.D. degree from Columbia Law School. Kennedy's professional life has spanned law and politics as well as education and charitable work. She has also acted as a spokesperson for her family's legacy and co-authored two books on civil liberties with Ellen Alderman.

In the 2008 presidential election, Kennedy endorsed Democratic candidate Barack Obama for President early in the primary race; she later stumped for him in Florida, Indiana, and Ohio, served as co-chair of his Vice Presidential Search Committee, and addressed the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver. After Obama's selection of then-Senator Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State, Kennedy expressed interest in being appointed to Clinton's vacant Senate seat from New York, but she later withdrew from consideration, citing "personal reasons".
